Large diameter ceiling fans have become a common tool for reducing energy costs and increasing occupant comfort in buildings with large open spaces. Advantages include improved air circulation, destratification of room air temperatures, and evaporative cooling of room occupants. This presentation will discuss challenges encountered in establishing standardized performance testing, an important requirement for both consumers and regulators of these fans.
Since direct measurement of airflow rate is impractical for these large fans, performance objectives have instead focused on measuring the thrust imparted on the air by the fan, which is a measure of the change in momentum of the column of air. Large diameter ceiling fans use large volumes of low velocity air to create a consistent air circulation path within the space. But just as these large-scale room air currents provide a benefit for users of these fans, the room currents can influence the measured fan performance. Test room size in relation to fan size is a key variable in ensuring test results are independent from test environment. Studies on room size and its influence on test results will be presented.
